A new identity for Machteld Stoop. She wanted a simple, conceptual, playful and clear identity. The word mast adapts to its function:
a spar or structure rising above the hull and upper portions of a ship or boat to hold sails, spars, rigging, booms, signals, etc., at some point on the fore-and-aft line, as a foremast or mainmast.
The space between the brackets can be considered as a "flag":
a piece of cloth, varying in size, shape, color, and design, usually attached at one edge to a staff or cord, and used as the symbol of a nation, state, or organization, as a means of signaling, etc.; ensign; standard; banner; pennant.
In the case of this logo: the shapes, colors or designs is always positioned between the letters ma and st.
